Improved sanitation facilities include flush or pour flush toilets to sewerage systems, septic tanks or pit latrines, improved pit latrines (pit latrines with a slab or ventilated pit latrines) and composting toilets. A handwashing facility is a device to contain, transport or regulate the flow of water to facilitate handwashing.

Although the main challenges in terms of magnitude exist in the larger cities, these are also relatively better-placed in terms of institutional and economic capacity to address the problems through economies of scale. Most smaller cities lack this advantage and clearly need to focus on capacity-building as a necessary step towards improving their water and wastewater management systems. A high vulnerability is indicative of transboundary aquifers actively interacting with streams, atmosphere and/or sea (e.g. coastal aquifers, SIDS, shallow watertable aquifers, karst aquifers).

Data was gathered from the Water Point Data Exchange (WPDx) platform, a tool established for sharing water point data throughout the global water sector. The goal of the Water Point Data Exchange is to simplify the way water point data is shared so all stakeholders can work more efficiently. For more information, visit the WPDx website at https://www.waterpointdata.org/

It is one of the major contributors of freshwater entering the Adriatic Sea. The Dinaric Karst Aquifer System extends from NE Italy through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro to Albania. Karst formations connected with the Dinaric carbonate chain outcrop also in Serbia, FYR Macedonia, and possibly in NW Greece. In the framework of the DIKTAS GEF-project (2010-2014) executed by UNESCO-IHP, the four DIKTAS project countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro) have agreed to create two mechanisms in order to facilitate enhanced consultation and exchange of information between the governmental entities that are involved in water resources management. For more information, visit: http://diktas.iwlearn.org/
